Thank you for your very interesting site. I stumbled across it when I started searching for anything about Garden Villas Elementary School, which I attended from 1947 to 1953. I was graduated from S.F. Austin HS in 1959. I believe the “Garden Villas May Fete” picture is actually of Henderson Elementary School, which has a flat roof and a cupola. The Garden Villas building has a peaked roof and no cupola. Here’s the Henderson web page, with a recent photo. http://es.houstonisd.org/jphendersonES/Components/Home.htmI remember the Garden Villas May Fete of 1948 because I was a  participant. If memory serves, it was held on the grassy area in front of the main entrance. Later May Fetes with their May Poles moved to the rear of the campus, and the celebration was eventually discontinued.

Thank you for this interesting piece of history, and for the pleasant memory.

Best regards,
Stuart Moses

We just lost another friend Saturday 9/25, David Waters passed away. David had just retired from 43 (I think) years as trombonist with the Houston Synphony. He was actually in class of ’58 but had played in our  orchestra and UH orchestra so many years with Jay Juneman, James Vick and others that he adopted our class 30 years ago and we were happy to adopt him. He performed musically at many of our reunions. A memorial service will be held later this Fall, end Oct or early Nov. God bless David and comfort his family. Bill (Hugo)

We had a beautiful spring and for the first time I had wonderful peaches. Being born in Houston I had never seen a peach growing on a tree before. We have two daughters. Polly teaches art at South Texas in San  Marcos and is married to a professor of government at U of Texas. I thought some of your kids or grandkids might have had him. My older daughter works for the county attorney in Burnet. Now some of you let us know what you are up to in your old age! I don’t feel old at 71, Do you you?The proffesor is BartholowSparrow.

Hi everyone,
I want to thank everyone for letting me know about Larry’s death. Fortunately I was keeping in touch with Hugo and he called me Sunday morning and told me of his passing. As it turned out I was on a mini Texas  vacation and in Carthage when he called. Larry and I were not real close during high school but through the reunion committee meetings and right before and after his move to east Texas we visited alot. He at my house and myself at his house in Houston and his cabin in east Texas. I helped him with with the designing of the plumbing in his cabin. Which we never did complete. I told Alan at the east Texas memmorial last Friday, what ever they need to complete the plumbing I am available., Until a person ever sat and talked with Larry one on one they couldn’t appreciate what a fine human being he was. I miss you buddy and will always miss your humor and wisdom. I can’t think think of a person I admired more than Larry Keith. He left a beautiful family that that I got to meet Friday. See you at the Houston memmorial.Ed Bettencourt III

Gordon Smith, class of 55 informed me that Charles Snoozie Boyer departed this earth on Saturday, April 18. Snoozie suffered many years from complications of hip surgery. He was an unheralded, talented, artist. He  painted many beautiful commercial signs for my business during the 70’s and 80’s. Some of the recognizable pieces of art he created for all of Houston include, the 45 foot tall cowboy on Telephone Road, the elephant outside of the Safari Restaurant on Richmond, and the crab in front of Guido’s Restaurant on S Main, currently in Galveston. Rest in peace, Snoozie..

You can also get the book “Telephone Road, Texas” by Burton Chapman at the Hobby Airport Museum which is located in the original Houston Municipal Airport off Telephone Road – They are completely restoring this building and are working on enlarging the airport museum – It is open to the public – Burton Chapman
had a slide show and book signing there last week and I went to that – Everyone there really got him since he left out the Ranger Drive Inn – He begs forgiveness – He is currently a teacher in the Special Education Dept. at Pearland High School. The book cost $15.95 + tax at the museum – He plans on writing a second edition and wants input. He is a youngster and grew up on Telephone Road in the 90’s. His email is burtonandmusic@earthlink.net. I am starting a list of things that I would like to see in his next book – he also would like photos if we have any – Anybody have a photo of the Ranger Drive Inn?He has a great photo of the Santa Roas Theater in its hayday – golly that brought back memories. Burton would like photos that he could publish as well as information.

I spent a year trying to find some way to get Keith wines sold or otherwise shipped in the US, but to no avail. The US laws, coupled with state laws, make alcohlic beverage trade a very expensive operation… import licenses, distribution licenses and taxes. Only way would be if an existing importer took on the Keith brand, and a US distributer would handle it. But, the Keith winery is too small, bottling less than 20,000 bottles per year, much of which is sold in Germany and England. What remains nobody figures is sufficient quantity to trouble themselves with. The few bottles I have enjoyed were
bootlegged…. sent illegally from the winery to me.

I waslooking for info on the ’58 reunion–and found ’57 instead–which is great because as a midtermer in ’58 I always felt I was part of both classes. The reunion pictures were wonderful–though I found myself exclaiming, “Oh, my God, is that really…” on a number of occasions. 🙂 I recall beating one attendee (no names, please!) over the head with a broom once–we were about age 6. I would not have known him without the caption. I was saddened to learn Nelna Dominy had just died–she and Libbie Wade preceeded me as editors of the Round-Up–taught me almost as much journalism as Mama Brown did. I hope the ’58 class gets organized for its 50th soon–and has as much fun as the class of ’57 obviously did! I’ve lived in Colorado for 25 years–missed the 30th but made the 40th. Hard to believe we’re all up to the 50th!

Nancy and I were so looking forward to being at the 50th. A few days before it was to start, Nancy had a seizure and all thought she should not attend. She is doing fine now, and has no memory of what happened. We hope that every one had a great time and we look forward to seeing any and all of you when the we can. We still are in Pasadena and our phone no. is 281-991-6545.

I want to give big kudos to all those who worked to bring us the 50 year reunion on September 8th, 2007. There wasn’t enough time to visit all who attended. Thanks to Dolores Allen for the musical CD with the school songs.Especially the feelings of pride upon hearing again the band play the Green and White. Forgotten were the fondly remembered words “Withers Walk” that Chuck Jones mentioned. Sad to know that it was vetoed by the Band Director. My how times have changed, these days it would bring applauds. Sounds of the Brigade playing were heart warming indeed, sadly a reminder never to be heard again. The school fight song, which cheered our players to victory. All of us have heart felt memories of the golden days of our youth. We were so very lucky to have experienced those times.

There were pictures but dose not look like they copied. Oh Well!Subject: That’s only 52 years ago!Remember When?…

A few of you will remember these times, but the rest of you, I thought you’d get a kick out of the prices….If they changed that much in the last 51 years, what do ya suppose they’ll do in the next 51….

That’s only 52 years ago!

Comments made in the year 1955:

“I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $20.”

“Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $2000 will only buy a used one.”

“If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.”

“Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?”

“If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.”

“When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage.”

“Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.”

“I’m afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying ‘damn’ in ‘Gone With The Wind,’ it seems every new movie has either “hell” or “damn” in it.

“I read the other day where some scientist thinks it’s possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas ”

“Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn’t surprise me if someday they’ll be making more than the president.”

“I never thought I’d see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.”

“It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.”

“It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.”

“Marriage doesn’t mean a thing any more; those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.”

“I’m just afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.”

“Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.”

“The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.”

“There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $15 a night to stay in a hotel.”

“No one can afford to be sick any more; $35 a day in the hospital is too rich for my blood.”

“If they think I’ll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.”

Know any friends who would get a kick out of these?

i would like to tell everyone how sad it is that Don Uzzle passed away this weeked. I was the matron of honor and Joe Novotny the best man when he married our classmate Gene Watters. He had two sons and two lovely grandaughters. Please keep them all in your prayers at this difficult time.On a lighter note I was recently in the doctors office waiting for an xray and a nice lady and her husband were ahead me. I smiled and she smiled back, all the while wondering what was wrong with that old man.. My xray was for a broken foot. To make a long story short the nurse came in later and said that couple waiting for the xray said they went to high school with you! It was Tommmy Cash who is now married to Barbara Henshaw. I am sure they wondered who the old lady was (ME). Anyway they live in Kingsland about 20 miles from me and my husband here in Llano, Texas.A Merry Christmas to you all! Mary Frances Wallace Lanning

In the AARP material there was an offering whereby peoplepc.com provides Internet service to the elderly (we qualify) and it only costs $4.95 per month. That sure beats AOL, in case you are looking to save about $200 a year.

well-spent and appreciated. Glad he got a lengthy span of it.

Hello all!I was checking the web site and realized that I needed to update my email address. New one is poromere@direcway.com. Betsy and I celebrated our 40th anniversary on March 28th, so it looks like she might keep me around for a while now. We now have 5 grandchildren, with the newest, a girl, being almost 7 months old. I am still doing aerospace consulting and was notified last week that I am being hired on by NASA Johnson Space Center as a NASA Expert Consultant, still to be a part time task I can do mostly from my home in the woods in Colorado. I guess they got tired of calling so much and accepting free consultation over the past nearly 8 years I have been “retired”. Can you really say that word and be working part time? So far, we both are of excellent health and are most thankful for that.We had much more of a normal winter with normal snow accumulation, so hopefully the drought here is
no the mend and we won’t have to fear wildfires this summer. The invitation is always open to all classmates to stop in for a visit to our house in the woods if they are ever in the area around Durango or Pagosa Springs, CO. We live about midway between the two. Just give a call and I can give directions.I have made a commitment to do all possible to attend our 50th reunion and am looking forward to seeing old friends again.

Best wishes to all,

Paul Romere

Larry we, in Oklahoma know about Eureka Springs & the Ozarks as they are our close neighbors. It does not make a difference when you go there as it is beautiful all the time. This is a favorite of bikers & convertible riders
to hit the curves and mountains. Fishermen like it as there are serveral big lakes around there. A lot of our friends go there to gt married or their kids to get married. Great eating places. You have various places to stay from hotels to motels to camping facilities. The only bad part that I can think of too many places where women can shop. My wife enjoys shopping or browsing I should say. I just go find a nice park and sit and watch the traffice both girls & cars & motorcycles. They say the reason there are so many Harley”s there is a while back a couples bike broke down and the bikers keep going back to take them parts to fix the bike. If they had a Honda golfwing they would not have that problem. Anyway I have to agree with Larry it is a great place to visit. If anyone ever goes up there let me know and we will take a hop up there and have lunch with you Richard Briones
